Why do we need a Prep Course?

Dr. Susan Knowles, DNP, RN

As nursing schools have increased their enrollment to address the projected nursing shortage, it is becoming more difficult for full-time faculty to meet their teaching responsibilities (Kelly, 2006).  Clinical nurse experts are often hired to fill clinical faculty positions as a strategy to combat the faculty shortage and to prevent turning away students (Clark, 2013; West, Borden, Bermudez, & Hanson-Zalot, 2009). Frequently, however, they do not possess the necessary teaching skills to blend didactic content into the clinical experience (Stein, Fujisaki, Davis, & MacLean, 2012; West et al., 2009). Furthermore,  these newly hired instructors must transition into the role of faculty with little notice and only a brief orientation. National organizations recommend preparation of novice clinical faculty is needed before teaching (NCSBN, 2008; NLN, 2002). Ensuring these clinical instructors possess the necessary teaching skills is the key to their ability to prepare the next generation of competent and safe nurses (Kelly, 2006; Oermann, 1998). For these reasons, the Online Academic Clinical Nursing Instructor Preparation Program was developed.

During this 4-6 week program, the participants complete 1-2 modules each week. Modules topics are: role transition, mentoring, teaching & learning, the Clinical Day/rotation & the student evaluation.
